Title : From single-organ targeting to integrated system: The emerging paradigm of Multi-System Synergistic Nutrition (MSSN)
Abstract:
Traditional nutritional interventions have predominantly relied on an organ-centric framework, targeting discrete physiological endpoints such as hepatic detoxification, gut microbiota modulation, or neurocognitive enhancement. While this reductionist perspective has yielded valuable mechanistic insights, it fails to adequately address the integrated, network–level physiology that underlies chronic disease, aging, and other complex health trajectories. Moreover, individual variability profoundly influences nutritional responses and health outcomes, further complicating single–organ or one–size–fits–all nutritional interventions. Multi–System Synergistic Nutrition (MSSN) represents a paradigm shift toward system–wide nutritional strategies grounded in inter–organ communication and regulatory dynamics. By aligning nutritional interventions with these interconnected pathways, MSSN seeks to reinforce systemic homeostasis and resilience, moving beyond the optimization of isolated organ functions. This systems-based approach aligns with emerging disciplines such as systems biology, precision nutrition, and functional medicine, all of which emphasize multi–layered biological regulation over single-target interventions.
Recent evidence supports this approach. the gut–liver–brain axis illustrates how microbiota–derived metabolites influence systemic metabolism and cognition, as shown by a high-fat/high-fructose NAFLD mouse model, oral Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium longum reduced body weight gain (~15%), hepatic lipid accumulation (~57%), downregulated gut dysbiosis and NF-κB activation, and upregulatded AMPK activation, while improving cognition and mood. Similarly, the gut–skin axis demonstrates SCFA-driven benefits: high-fiber intake increased butyrate production and reduced transepidermal water loss by ~40% and IgE sensitization (p<0.01). Our recent product development further illustrates MSSN in practice by a combination of multiple nutrients. In formulations designed for high-stress individuals, we achieved coordinated improvements in gastrointestinal function, systemic inflammation, microbiota composition, and stress-adaptive responses—outcomes unattainable through single-target approaches.
Collectively, this report discusses the conceptual foundation and emerging evidence for Multi-System Synergistic Nutrition as a transformative approach to nutritional science, emphasizing integrated, system–level interventions to address complex health challenges and offering a translational pathway toward next-generation nutrition solutions for aging, metabolic disorders, and other multifactorial health challenges.
