Title : Evaluation of total aflatoxin contamination in sesame (Sesamum indicum) seeds produced, processed, and sold in the Ségou region and the Bamako district from 2018 to 2020

Abstract:

Introduction: Sesame is an important oilseed crop in Africa, generating considerable revenue and playing a key role in the economy. However, the sanitary quality of the seeds represents a major obstacle to its development, particularly due to contamination by Total Aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2), which compromises food safety and export potential.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the contamination of sesame produced, processed, and marketed by Total Aflatoxins in Ségou and the District of Bamako.

Methodology: This is a descriptive analytical study. Total Aflatoxin was quantified using the NF EN ISO 16050 October 2011 method; reverse-phase HPLC with fluorescence detection and post-column derivatization after extraction with solvent (methanol-water). Samples were collected from wholesalers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and farmer organizations (FOs).

Results: The analysis results of samples from wholesalers in Commune II of the District of Bamako exceeded both standards — the European Union standard (4µg/Kg) and the Codex Alimentarius standard (10µg/Kg).

Conclusion and Perspectives: The study highlights contamination of sesame by total aflatoxin, particularly among wholesalers in Commune II. It is essential to strengthen conservation practices throughout the entire production chain. Future research should further assess the health risks associated with consumption and propose corrective measures to improve sesame quality.
